How to learn German in Berlin

Being immersed in the German-speaking world already will give you an amazing advantage when it comes to learning German, but maybe you want a little help regardless.

If you want to learn German from scratch, improve your existing German, or simply brush up on some skills while living in Germany’s capital city, Berlin, this article will offer you an overview of places to learn German in Berlin.

Why learn German in Berlin?

Maybe you haven’t decided yet whether you want to move to Germany.

To start off, being in the country where your target language is being spoken will make it possible to completely immerse yourself in it and the new culture.

It will give you a chance to improve your pronunciation by being surrounded by native speakers 24/7.

This will also give you an amazing insight into the German slang words and idioms you usually don’t learn in language courses.

Berlin is a great destination as it offers a unique variety of attractions, people, and cultures.

You will also learn the Berlinerisch dialect and might end up sounding like ein echter Berliner (a true Berliner).

 GLS Campus

GLS (German Language School) is an amazing option for anyone who is serious about learning German.

The campus offers a hotel on-site, so finding accommodation will be no problem.

GLS offers a variety of intensive courses, so if you only have a short time available in Berlin, you will make the most of it!

They are also an official testing center for the TestDaf – which will be necessary if you want to study or work in Germany!

Goethe Institut

The Goethe Institut is an amazing option if you plan to travel around during your studies.

Having branches in cities all around the world, the Goethe Institut makes it possible to continue your studies even while traveling across the world.

In terms of cheap ways to learn German in Berlin, the Goethe Institut might not rank on top of the list, as it tends to be on the pricier side, but it will be worth every cent.

The Institute is one of the most renowned language schools in Germany and is highly regarded all over the world.

You will find courses beginning at 2 weeks up to a length of 8 weeks there.

No matter if you are just starting out or already preparing for your C1 language exam, the Goethe Institute will have a course for you!

Sprachsalon

Sprachsalon (in English language salon) can be found right in the center of Berlin. This school will be perfect for you if you prefer more relaxed and laid-back lessons.

Escaping the stereotypical classroom flair, Sprachsalon has super nice and friendly teachers and a stylish setting.

There are intensive classes if you like that, but you can also choose semi-intensive if that is what you prefer. Even the intensive classes won’t be as stressful and serious as real classrooms, however.

Another advantage of Sprachsalon is that the classes are super small with an average of five to nine students per class. If you like one-on-one sessions, they are available upon request, as well.

There is no timeframe for the course, but of course, the longer you stay, the more German you will learn. Plus, it will give you time to get to know and become friends with your classmates.

Expath

Expath is an independent organization, and its courses are typically one month long.

Before joining, each and every student has to take a placement test to be put in a class that will perfectly suit their language level and needs.

If you want to work in Berlin, this might be your best option.

Expath offers lots of workshops and professional guidance when becoming self-employed or organizing health insurance in Germany.

This will be incredibly helpful in the chaos of moving countries, believe me!

If you want to permanently move to Berlin, Expath will even help you find your first apartment in the city!

Volkshochschule

This school is intended as a training center for adults on all kinds of skills and topics like IT, politics, health, culture, and much more.

The Volkshochschule is subsidized by the city and puts its focus on equality and access to quality education for everybody.

They also offer great language courses and you will be able to choose the number of hours you want to study for all language levels.

In terms of finance, it is among your cheapest options starting at only 69 Euros for students!

The only downside is probably the size of classes, which are larger and fuller than in the previous language schools mentioned.

This might give you a drawback in having your individual needs met, but if you don’t mind it too much, this could be a great option!

Alternatives to Schools

If you don’t want to have anything to do with schools, think of all the other options you have when learning a language:

  • One-on-one sessions with teachers or tutors
  • Online classes with a teacher (live)
  • Language Tandems (finding a partner to learn German with)
  • Language learning apps

Become ein echter Berliner!

So, no matter which school or alternative you end up choosing, moving to Berlin will help you loads in learning the language!

The Berlin dialect is very distinct and it will be a fun challenge, trying to decypher words at first, but trust me, you will get used to it way quicker than anticipated, and soon sound like ein echter Berliner.

The city has so much to offer, from art to culture, to nightlife, whatever you are interested in, you can probably find in Berlin.

Meeting cool, new people will also boost your skills to the next level, as you will speak with the natives.

With all of these options available, there is really no going wrong. It is only a matter of you choosing what feels right for you and your goals.

Good luck on your journey!
